China’s Jilin Province Logistics Group and Russia’s RZD Logistics have signed an agreement to create a new Eurasian logistics route. This highway will link Changchun, the administrative centre of Jilin province, with the Hunchun cross-border checkpoint in China and continue all the way to Moscow. The project aims to improve cross-border trade, streamline transport operations, and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Factsheet

  1. The agreement focuses on building a Changchun-Hunchun-Moscow logistics highway.

  2. Initiatives include optimising customs procedures and modernising cargo transshipment technologies.

  3. The highway aims to reduce logistics costs for key Jilin industries, such as automotive engineering and agricultural processing.

  4. Changchun hosts major Chinese car manufacturers, auto component factories, and railway vehicle production.

  5. The highway’s target throughput will match the Manzhouli-Zabaikalsk crossing, which handles over 50% of China-Russia land cargo.

  6. In 2024, more than 20 million tons of cargo passed through the Zabaikalsk-Manzhouli checkpoint.

  7. Jilin Logistics Group will maintain smooth operations, enhance railway traffic efficiency, and develop an integrated ‘Logistics + Production + Trade’ service system.

  8. RZD Logistics will build the Russian side of the highway and improve the Hunchun-Kamyshovaya-Moscow route using the Trans-Siberian Railway and Jilin checkpoints.

The new highway will upgrade and expand existing routes in both China and Russia. Currently, the road distance between Changchun and Moscow is 7,582 km, and the planned improvements aim to make cross-border trade faster and more efficient.

Europe and Asia invest in strategic transport corridors

As nations invest in modern transport corridors to boost trade and connectivity, large-scale projects like the Romania pushes ahead on A7 Highway despite tight deadlines illustrate similar ambitions in Europe.

Just as China’s Jilin Province Logistics Group and Russia’s RZD Logistics are upgrading the Changchun-Hunchun-Moscow logistics highway to streamline cross-border trade, Romania is developing the A7 Highway between Focșani and Bacău to enhance regional mobility, secure EU funding, and support economic growth. Both initiatives show how strategic infrastructure can improve efficiency, reduce costs, and strengthen trade links across borders.
