CleanArc Data Centers is significantly expanding its flagship data center campus in Virginia, acquiring an additional 87.5 acres to boost its critical power capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt (GW). The move comes amid rising demand for large-scale, sustainability-focused data centers capable of supporting hyperscale computing.
Initially set to be a 600-megawatt plant, CleanArc now will supply the expansion in three stages. The first 300MW is due online early in 2027, with the second tranche expected in 2030. The last 300MW may be finished between 2033 and 2035, providing redundancy and resilience to meet existing workloads and future expansion.
VA1 campus growth highlights the growing importance of energy-efficient digital infrastructure. “This growth allows CleanArc to support the needs of the most demanding hyperscalers,” said James Trout, company founder and CEO. He said the company is committed to sustainability while helping local economic growth through its collaborations with Caroline County.
Construction on the VA1 expansion project will start in the fourth quarter of 2025. Analysts say the growth is reflective of wider trends in the data center industry, where companies are asking for more high-capacity, renewable-powered facilities to serve cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and other data-intensive applications.
With nearly 1GW of capacity in the pipeline, CleanArc’s Virginia campus could be a major digital infrastructure hub in one location, with scale, reliability, and sustainability.
Demand for data centers
Demand for data centers is surging across the United States and around the world, driven by rapid growth in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services. Hyperscale facilities are expanding to handle massive volumes of data, while companies increasingly prioritize sustainability and renewable energy integration. This global trend reflects the critical role of digital infrastructure in powering everything from enterprise operations to everyday consumer applications, making large, resilient, and energy-efficient data centers more essential than ever.
