International Green Structures Manufacturing Kenya (IGSM-K) in collaboration with the National Construction Authority of Kenya (NCA) conducted a two-day training on the 15th and the 16th of September, 2016 at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies in Ruaraka, Nairobi. The objective of the training was to provide awareness and training among local artisans regarding IGS building solutions and Compressed Agricultural Fiber (CAF) materials. The trainees, comprised of accredited site supervisors and construction workers shortlisted by the NCA, received classroom and hands-on training on the IGStructure components as well as a practical demonstration of the IGStructure assembly process.

IGSM-K intends to engage the trained construction workers and site supervisors in the execution of their first pilot project which is set to commence in a few weeks. Upon the successful completion of this project, IGS will certify these artisans who will then be qualified to utilize the innovative technology in future projects. The goal of IGSM-K is to have at least two IGS certified builders in each of the 47 countries in Kenya.

IGS manufactures alternative building materials for the construction market from its manufacturing facility located in Thika, Kenya. IGS purchases agricultural rice and wheat straw and produces durable, strong panels and connects them to a pre- engineered steel framing system to produce international and nationally approved designs for houses, schools and healthcare facilities called IGStructures.

According to the World Bank, by 2030, the number of people requiring access to low cost housing will balloon to 3 billion or approximately 40% of the world’s population and according to UN-Habitat, globally, some 827 million people live in urban slums. To provide homes for these groups alone would require a minimum of 167 million housing structures. IGS understands the affordable housing market and aims to bridge this gap by empowering individuals in the Kenyan construction industry to use the CAF & Steel as an alternative building technology to meet the housing needs of its citizens.
