This body of knowledge and skill is available to assist our clients in attaining their dreams of an affordable pool scape, landscape or waters cape environment. Water features make for great focal points in the garden with the calming and soothing effect of rushing water or the sound of the wind as it causes ripples on the water surface.
The ultimate water feature to have in your compound is a swimming pool.
Swimming pools come in different shapes and sizes, from kidney shaped, oval, round, geometric, rectangular, and square, the list is endless.
However, there are two main types of pools that are done locally; we have the free board pool, deck level pool or the overflow pools. A free board pool has the water level between four and six inches from the top.
Deck level and overflow pools, on the other hand, have the water level right at the edge; such that any displacement of water causes it to overflow.
Horizon and infinity pools are part free board and part deck level to give an illusion of endless water. They are usually sloped to have the water level below the edge on one side and flowing over on the other.
“The most popular pools among our clients are the deck level pools,” says Kenneth Karani.
“They create very beautiful illusions with the water level but are, however, more expensive and require more water for the overflow effect,” he explains.
Some pool makers import fiberglass and liner pools on request.
These are usually ready made pools that are already assembled and only need to be fixed in the area that a person wants.
Liner pools are made of canvas held up by support beams sunk into the ground and held at the top before being filled with water.
There are, however, PVC liner pools available from different outlets. For these, the area where the pool is to be situated is excavated before the pool is installed.
The shells for the PVC liner pools cost from Sh1.2 million for a five meter pool up to Sh1.5 million for a 12metre by six meter. This cost, however, does not include the accessories or excavation fee.
COST DEPENDS ON POOL SIZE
The cost of the installation equipment, excavation, as well as the assembly will cost an additional Sh600, 000 depending on the size of the pool.
Fiberglass pools are not as popular due to the rigidity of design as well as their fragility during transportation.
“Fiberglass and linear pools may be easy to place and are beautiful, but they have a short lifespan and cost more,” says Karani.
Though not a popular option, there have been a few indoor pools, especially for people who do not feel comfortable swimming out in the open.
With an indoor pool, heating is needed as the pool has limited access to the sun. Solar heating is a cost-effective alternative for pools. Those wishing to have heated pools must invest in pool covers to keep the heat locked in when the pool is not in use.
The water can be heated electrically or by the use of boilers which are especially good for high temperature water but are rather expensive, says Karani.
According to Karani, when selecting an exercise pool, it is best to use a shape that includes two parallel walls on the ends.
Pools with softened rounded corners add to strength of the pool and makes it easier to clean.
“Concrete pools are done on loose soil such as black cotton while stone type is done on red soil which is more compact,” explains Karani.
Pool finishes are usually done in tile, Mosaic, concrete or even mazeras stone.
“Mosaic creates very beautiful designs in the pool but the cost makes people shy away from it,” he adds.
Mazeras are used for the area surrounding the pool. Their natural look as well as non-slip nature makes them ideal for avoiding pool side accidents.
“When budgeting for a pool, a large one like the 12 by six meter pool, one should set aside about Sh2.8 million for the project,” says Karani.
This cost is inclusive of the excavation, labor and materials needed for the pool. A smaller pool like an eight by six meter pool will cost approximately Sh2. million.
Swimming pool construction is not a do-it-yourself kind of project. It is not the type of project that can be done properly without the right prior experience, tools, and products.
Karani Pool Services Limited is an expert in pool construction, maintenance and repair of all types of swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, fountains, and other aquatic installations.
They have trained artisans that know the products they are working with and have hands-on experience using proven techniques.
The company utilizes a well-established communication system that ensures reliable and constant coordination with all their field operators. For instance they advice the client on the type of swimming pool to construct, according to the nature of the soil; which is the determinant. Red soil is cheaper and easier to construct compared to black cotton or rocky/ concrete due to excavation of rocks.
It uses the most advanced technology, and constantly strives to improve the quality of their work, while they minimize their cost. Additionally, they have established a detailed technical and inspection standards, to assure the quality of their work. The company takes pride in designing and planning environments that aim to ensure clients enjoy the space created.
In a collaborative approach with the customers, the company applies design principals, and knowledge integration, in order to produce products which are attractive, productive and reflects a customer’s values. Production relies on a 3-D computer generated design which is given to clients. In that case, all pivotal workers have been trained to understand and work from drawings. Power blackouts have been the core obstacle in many pools; therefore, the company has embraced the use of solar systems to avert this. “Solar system is cheaper to maintain but expensive to install compared to electricity,” clarifies Kenneth Karani, one of the directors.
“We focus on meeting the needs of residential and commercial consumers. In this competitive market, we believe we have the knowledge and experience to give our clients an edge. We are familiar with the pressures of both the retail and large industrial markets,” he said.
Since its inception it has successfully undertaken several works for various clients ranging from government and institutional facilities to private and commercial clients. They have a large database of satisfied clients which include: Canadian High Commission, UNHCR Kakuma, Chinese Embassy, British High Commission and Embassy of State of Qatar.
The company maintains a long standing rapport between themselves and the clients after completion of the projects by visiting the sites and providing professional advice which provides the comfort of knowing they stand behind every job.
It also offers training to pool attendants on safety measures and maintenance. Besides, the firm wishes to work together with other professionals in the industry to initiate a training course that meet international standards.
According Mr. Karani, there are challenges which still drag the industry behind, some clients want to be decision makers on the projects and they end up giving wrong specification. “We would rather lose the job than injure our reputation by being controlled by the clients,” insist Mr. Karani. Furthermore, the mistake can be made at the design stage whereby a quantity surveyor might miss or fail to inquire on the right product for the right job and opt for an inferior product. In that case, they prefer to be considered on the design stage considering that it makes their work easier.
Karani Pool Services employs certified artisans that are trained with the latest products and understand all aspects of swimming pool construction. Other aquatic companies often use subcontractors that only know one system, or only use one product. According to Mr. Karani, incorrect products or incorrect applications can easily result in wasted time and money. “Moreover, such companies that use sub-contractors get business because of trademark,” he emphasizes.
“Our wish is to promote, support and introduce the best technologies in civil engineering as well as the supply of relevant swimming accessories. This will enable us to win the local market share as we aspire to dominate Eastern Africa,” he concluded.
The company is based at Kiungani Road off Mombasa Road.
