Industry
According to Mr Kimoro, the construction industry in Kenya is facing major challenges. These include infiltration by quacks who oversee projects that ultimately endanger lives as a result of substandard work; lack of capacity in construction firms, a situation that results in failure by some contractors to meet deadlines; and an acute shortage of qualified and trained professionals. Another problem is lack of capacity in monitoring the performance and compliance of contractors by the relevant bodies. The firm feels that some of these problems could be addressed by:
- Strengthening and empowering the professional bodies and boards in monitoring sites
- Empowerment of contractors in project and financial management refresher courses
- Enforcing minimum training and qualifications for persons engaging in construction and requirements to have trained personnel working in construction firms
