Leading steel manufacturer in Ghana has announced that it was undergoing what it said is ‘a historic restructuring’ aimed at ensuring that the firm stays ahead amid stiff competition.
The Western Steel and Forging Limited, first indigenous steel manufacturer in Ghana, is currently undertaking a major restructuring. The new strategic vision is meant to transform and modernize its operations.
According to Mr. Bhupen Achavya, the General Manager, Operations and Projects, the company is being overhauled in line with the changing trends and to meet the international standards. Mr. Achavya further revealed that various heavy machines have already been shipped into the country such as Continuous Casting Machines (CCMs) and are being installed as part of steps to achieve the new vision.
The company’s restructuring vision aims to speed up the production and significantly slash down the production cost. Additionally, civil platforms are being cast for the massive pieces of equipment in the company’s Tema premises.
Procurement and installation of such expensive but efficient equipment is indispensable for sufficient productivity, improve efficiency but more importantly create more room for employment.
According to present statistics, at least 10,000 tonnes of iron rods are locally consumed every month resulting to the spending extra huge cash on the essential building material. Additionally, the local currency has greatly been burden due to large chunk of the steel supplies imported into the country with foreign exchange.
The company will however, commence its sufficient production beginning February this year. The company will evenly manufacture adequate quantities of steel rods with a goal to trim down the extra cost spent on importing iron rods.
Besides, the company is as well working on modernizing its forging units by adding new machines that will make the company the best steel mill plant in the country.
Previously, the plant has been on the leading line of manufacturing forge balls for the mining industry. This is about to change and the plant will produce forth additional products which are nails, binding wire, wire rods among other steel products locally as well as boosting the country’s economy.
