Peter Thomas Associates Limited is a Kenyan architectural and interior design firm with extensive experience worldwide.
The practice was established in March 1999 by Peter Thomas and his Associates, all of whom have successfully completed some of Kenya’s finest buildings and interiors.
They have also completed similar projects internationally, both in Africa, Europe, the Far East, Australia and the United States of America.
All members of the team are, therefore, fully conversant with international standards of both architecture and interior design and are able, where necessary, to apply this to the requirements of East Africa both in terms of cost and the technical abilities of local contractors, in order to suit the client’s specific needs.
As well as having considerable architectural and interior design skills, the design team also has expertise in cost estimating and construction administration. In interior design, they also have the skills, where required, in the production of furniture.
With a full team of technical support staff and the most sophisticated CAD software, the practice is able to produce presentations to meet the client’s needs. This allows them a much clearer understanding of the project and assist in rapid decision making.
Experience
The key personnel at PTA have extensive work experience and have handled numerous projects locally and internationally since they began their architectural careers.
Peter Derek Thomas
He is a Registered Architect with Architectural Associations of Kenya and Tanzania. He is also a Registered Architect with Architects Registration Board, U.K., and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Peter has more than 34 years of experience in the preparation of designs, production drawings and coordination of consultants and post contract administration of many major hotel, lodge and commercial projects within East Africa.
Educated in the United Kingdom, Peter worked briefly in that country before relocating to Kenya where he worked at Cobb Archer & Partners – subsequently renamed – Archer Associates – for about 10 years before leaving to become a founder partner at Symbion International in 1980.
During his tenure at Symbion, Peter worked on a large number of projects including hotels, hospitals and commercial buildings. Some of the hospitality projects he worked on were Maasai Mara Serena Lodge, Lilian Towers, Serena Beach Hotel, Plantation Club (Mahe, Seychelles), Nairobi Serena and Whitesands Beach Hotel among many others. Medical projects included the Aga Khan Hospital (Nairobi and Dar es Salaam) and the Nairobi Hospital.
In 1997, he left Symbion and founded Peter Thomas Associates to further promote his objectives and specialize in tourism, medical and commercial projects. Since then, he has handled dozens of projects in these three genres.
In hospitality, Peter Thomas Associates have been consultants for leading establishments such as the Serena Group where they have worked on several facilities including Samburu Serena, Kilaguni Serena, Nairobi Serena and Maasai Mara Serena. Other tourism projects include Mountain Village, Kirawira Tented Camp and Sobo Lodge (all in Tanzania). Commercial projects include Fairview Office Park, a low cost housing project and an industrial warehouse in Uganda, a shopping mall in Kisumu and Imperial Court, luxury office accommodation in Nairobi. Peter Thomas Associates are also behind numerous housing projects including Windsor Park, Crucial Housing Development and executive houses/apartments in various cities in Kenya. In addition, the practice has handled at least nine banking projects including new branches, extensions, remodeling and other assignments.
On the medical front, Peter Thomas Associates have done various projects with Aga Khan University Hospital, Gertrude Garden’s Hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi Hospice and Hope Hospital (Kampala) among others.
Abde Abi Turab Imranali
Abi received his professional education in India and has more than eight years experience in residential and commercial projects. He joined Peter Thomas Associates in 2007 where he became a director in 2008.
Prior to his arrival at Peter Thomas Associates, Abi had worked for various well known architectural houses in Kenya such as U-Design and Mruttu Salman. He also briefly worked at Landplan Icon in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he was involved in various competitions for both commercial and residential designs.
Roy Woodward
Roy Woodward, based in the United Kingdom since 1999, has extensive global experience covering commercial, hospitality and medical projects since the mid 1970s. He has handled casinos, hotels and hospitals in numerous countries around the world including Kenya, Tanzania, USA, Malta, Ireland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Seychelles, Russia and Nigeria, among others.

In addition to the key personnel mentioned, the Practice has the following support staff: 1 Senior Architect, 3 Architects, 4 Architectural Technicians,1 Personal Assistant, 2 Accountants, 1 Secretary and 3 Messengers.
Equipment and Software
Peter Thomas Associates operate the modern equipment and software to keep up with the rapidly changing architectural and interior design world. Hardware includes Apple Macs, PCs and Plotters. Design software includes Archi CAD Version 13.0, Power CAD and Mini CAD Vector.
