Solar Beam is the oldest operating solar water heating manufacturing company in South Africa. The company was established in 1978 and was the first solar company to attain the SABS Mark of Approval.
Graham Mundy, founder and CEO of Solar Beam, says that the company’s 36 years experience has enabled it to design, manufacture and install systems suitable for each application. He says that the solar systems are robustly constructed and have stood the test of time. The company’s solar systems range from those for RDP houses, to residential homes and then right up to large industrial systems.
Solar Beam has installed numerous industrial systems in retirement complexes, hostels, factories, hospitals and hotels.
[quote_box_center]The largest system the company has installed is a 30,000 litre system for Toyota in Durban.[/quote_box_center]The company’s industrial systems save up to approximately half of the client’s water heating costs, which is a massive saving in this day and age.
Mundy cautions buyers to beware of cheap and nasty imports, particularly from the east, as they are generally unsuitable for Africa’s harsh weather conditions. He also says that buyers should always consider the sizing of the solar system, and should never compare existing electrical geyser volumes to a proposed solar water heater, as a solar system should always be substantially larger than an electric geyser.
According to Mundy, the South African government has recently shown increased support for locally manufactured, tried and tested solar water heating systems. He concludes by saying that Solar Beam has taken its rightful place as an industry leader in both the residential and the industrial markets.
