Voltex is an approximately 5 billion Rand per annum company employing in excess of 2000 staff members, including qualified technical experts. It has served clients in South Africa, Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho and Botswana, and hopes to spread wings across the rest of Africa. The company manufactures Standby Generators, Mini Substations, Type Tested low voltage and Medium Voltage switchgear, standard key start control panels, and mobile generator trailers, among other products.
Situated in Cato Ridge, Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, Voltex supplies products suited for, designed and tested to perform in African rugged conditions. Unlike many manufacturers, flexibility in designing has allowed Voltex to build diesel generators suitable for specific needs in Africa and SADC region since 2008. They range from 100kVA – 2200KVA.
Voltex MV/LV Solutions is a subsidiary of Voltex (wholly owned subsidiary of The Proudly Bidvest Group Limited).
“We ensure that local content and manufacturing is utilized to its fullest in each product so as to support local suppliers and distributors in creating a product we can proudly say was built in Africa” says Zoltan Petersen, the Financial Manager at Voltex.
Although the diesel generator market is largely dominated by western firms amidst increased development in Africa coupled with Africa’s volatile power grids, it is possible that local manufacturers and dealers/suppliers with good technical knowledge and backing will gain more ground in future because SADC region is pushing for utilization of local content to achieve economic stimulation.
One of their most recent interesting projects has been supply of a diesel power generator to Edendale hospital (South Africa), a project, according to Zoltan, “was unique in the way that we had to design a room and exhaust system that allowed for adequate sound attenuation without choking the generator due to the limited clean air available within the room it was situated.” BP Mozambique is also a recent client of a generator from Voltex, to make it possible for their Nacala expansion and restoration project.
Voltex runs mechanical load testing to rigorously test motor’s real power and measures its full load current and full load speeds up to 2000Amps to achieve efficiency and reliability in the equipment.
