One of the most fascinating topics in sewage treatment plants and systems is sustainability. Sustainability improves usability of these systems, in addition to saving power. Conventional sewage plants require large amount of electricity in order to force oxygen into the water (via water blowers) since they have very large amount of water.

Water has limited oxygen compared to air. Non-electric sewage treatment plant options present good news of improved efficiency and costs.

Decentralisation of sewage treatment plants has been called as a possible solution to ending the African “circle of disease” where diseases are caused by septic tank and latrine sewage.

Water Technology Engineering is a UK-based company that brings in 50 years of experience in drainage and 20 years of rainwater harvesting.

The company has manufactured the non-electric RDX filter FilterPod that brings sustainability in waste water treatment and management. WTE is in Africa, e.g. Uganda, and Nigeria and can sell to all Africa.

The non-electric RDX filter FilterPod treats waste water in air where there is more available oxygen for the pollutant digesting microbes.

At 10°C, air contains around 289 mg/L oxygen, whereas the greatest amount of dissolved oxygen possible in water at 10°C is 11 mg/L. At 10°C there is 2,566% more oxygen in air than is dissolved in water.

The unique RDX filter media has a huge surface area and is highly absorbent to both air and water – just like soil, which means bacteria have excellent environment to feed off pollutants present in water, which constitutes the removal of pollutants.

Air is drawn into the FilterPod system through natural air drafts. The FilterPod meets the Royal Commission Standards. Reduction of power usage also has ethical and environmental advantages, with the company’s new equipments producing 10-20% of the CO2 compared to other sewage treatment plants.

Centralized sewage treatment come with additional costs since 50% of the costs of treating the sewage is in the pipework, pump stations and sewers. The company’s Decentralised Wastewater Treatment ideology (DEWATS solution) can eliminate related costs and repair-related delays.

The company also provides rainwater tanks, rainwater harvesting technology/systems (harvesters) and rainwater filters. James Webb from WTE advises customers: “Make sure you buy the right product, not the cheapest.  Sewage treatment plants differ enormously in how they work.”
