Constellation and CyrusOne Team Up to Power New Freestone Data Center in Texas

Constellation Energy Corporation has announced a major agreement between its subsidiary Calpine LLC and CyrusOne, a leading global data center developer and operator, to provide 380 MW of power, grid connectivity, and site infrastructure for a new hyperscale data center facility adjacent to the Freestone Energy Center in Freestone County, Texas. The deal continues to highlight the growing demand for digital infrastructure in Texas and the US, as well as the demand being imposed on the regional grids.

Under the agreement, Calpine will use its Powered Land Capabilities. This is a suite of services that pairs generation, land, and transmission access. The services will support the new data center’s energy needs while ensuring reliable flows to the wider regional grid. Calpine also agreed exclusively to support Phase 2 of the development, adding another 380 MW of capacity. This will effectively enable over 760 MW of total power support across both phases. These commitments also build on earlier agreements between Calpine and CyrusOne for data center support at the Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County. Together, they now amount to over 1,100 MW of contracted capacity for CyrusOne data centers across Texas.

Key Quote

Joe Dominguez, President and CEO of Constellation, also highlighted the strategic value of this partnership in meeting the digital economy’s surge while maintaining grid reliability. Joe also pointed to the contribution made to local jobs and spur witnessed in economic growth. CyrusOne CEO Eric Schwartz also emphasized the collaboration’s role in delivering scalable and reliable infrastructure for customers in one of the fastest-growing data center markets in the region.

The new data center will be situated about 80 miles southeast of Dallas. Leveraging existing energy infrastructure around the Freestone Energy Center will help its development and reduce lead times for hyperscale build-out. The project also exemplifies how power producers and digital infrastructure developers are increasingly coordinating generation and connectivity to support rapid expansion of cloud, AI, and enterprise data services in key US markets. This is also as seen with TotalEnergies latest power supply deal with Google in Texas.
