The Gerald R. Ford International Airport operations center project continues to support airport efficiency and emergency coordination in Michigan, following its completion and integration into wider infrastructure upgrades. Initially launched as a $7.7 million development, the facility now operates as a centralized hub for communications, dispatch, and emergency response, reflecting the airport’s long-term modernization strategy.
Operations center strengthens airport resilience and coordination
The project delivered an 11,600-square-foot facility designed to consolidate key operational teams under one roof. Consequently, airport authorities improved coordination between communications, dispatch, and emergency management functions. The center operates 24-hours and includes a data center, video walls, and dedicated emergency response infrastructure.
Moreover, engineers designed the building to withstand extreme weather conditions, including high wind loads and impact resistance. Therefore, the facility ensures continuity of operations during crises. In addition, it supports public safety agencies across Kent County, strengthening regional emergency preparedness.
As of 2026, the operations center is fully operational and forms part of a broader airport transformation program. Furthermore, the facility integrates with recently completed infrastructure, including a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) building delivered in 2025. This adjacency improves response times and operational coordination across airport safety systems.
Meanwhile, the airport continues to expand under its wider “Project Elevate” initiative, which includes terminal expansions, a new control tower, and enhanced passenger facilities. Consequently, the operations center serves as a backbone for managing increased traffic and operational complexity.
In parallel, similar aviation infrastructure upgrades are underway across the United States, such as the JFK Airport New Terminal One project, which is redefining large-scale airport development through capacity expansion and sustainability integration.
Strategic role in airport modernization
The Gerald Ford Airport operations center project plays a critical role in transitioning the airport toward a more resilient and efficient system. Therefore, consolidating operations has reduced fragmentation and improved response coordination. In addition, the facility supports both daily airport functions and large-scale emergency scenarios.
Furthermore, the project reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated operational hubs within airport campuses. As a result, airports can respond faster to disruptions while maintaining service continuity. The Gerald Ford facility demonstrates how mid-sized airports are investing in advanced infrastructure to match growing demand.

The new operations center at the Gerald R Ford airport will be staffed 24/7 and include a data center, video walls, conference rooms, office, and break spaces among others. Michigan State Police, the Grand Rapids Police Department, and the Kent County’s Sheriff’s Office have voiced support for the project. Officials have stated that it will serve as a critical backup base in case of a countywide emergency, according to Ford Airport. The new operations center is not the only ongoing construction at the airport in Grand Rapids; construction is also underway on the first phase of the airport’s Project Elevate. The project includes a US$90 million expansion to add eight more passenger gates on concourse A, a US$50 million new and relocated aircraft control tower, and a US$25 million federal inspection station.
“This project represents the culmination of years of efforts to realign and streamline our operations and public safety functions. By bringing our teams under one roof, we’ll be able to ensure we are providing the best possible service to our guests, tenants, and the greater West Michigan community,” said the board chair of the Gerald R. Ford Airport Authority, Dan Koorndyk. “The teams who will occupy this space are critical for our daily operations,” said the airport president and CEO, Tory Richardson.
