Construction Begins on $288 Million East Kellogg Expansion – Wichita's Biggest Highway Project

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has officially launched construction on the long-awaited East Kellogg Expansion Project. Starting this Monday, March 23, 2026, crews are hitting the ground on what’s being called one of the biggest road rebuilds in state history, transforming a busy stretch of U.S. 54 (East Kellogg Avenue) into a smoother, safer artery for commuters and businesses alike.

The project stretches roughly two miles—from just east of Interstate 35 near 127th Street all the way to a quarter-mile east of 159th Street, spilling into both Sedgwick and Butler counties. At its core: widening U.S. 54 to a full six-lane corridor, complete with interchange tweaks at K-96, 143rd, and 159th streets. Add in 26 full bridge replacements (including those key overpasses), 32 brand-new retaining walls, and two-lane frontage roads on either side to keep local shops and driveways accessible—no more dead-end detours.

The goal? Cut congestion, boost safety, and make trips faster and more reliable in this growing eastern Wichita-Andover corridor.  Cost-wise, it’s hefty: the main construction contract clocks in at $287.97 million, awarded back in January 2026 to Dondlinger Wildcat EKC1 LLC—a Wichita-based joint venture that beat out competitors in KDOT’s December 2025 bid letting. (Some project docs peg the total at around $425 million when you factor in design, contingencies, and extras.) This isn’t pocket change—it’s the largest single contract KDOT has ever let, topping even the $239 million I-70 Polk-Quincy Viaduct job from late 2024.

Backed by State’s 10-Year, $10B IKE Initiative

Funding flows from Kansas’ Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE)—a massive 10-year, $10 billion push to modernize roads, bridges, and transit statewide. KDOT handled the environmental checks, got Federal Highway Administration green lights, and wrapped final design before today’s rollout. Public input came early—three meetings back in 2022—though some business owners near the route voiced worries last year about traffic snarls and access during work.

Early phases today? Low-key: preliminary grading, site prep, maybe some clearing. Minimal traffic hits at first, but expect phased closures later—KDOT’s stressing driver caution and real-time updates via their site. Full build-out will roll over years, not months, so patience is key.  Why now? East Kellogg’s been a bottleneck forever—too few lanes, aging bridges, constant jams.

This upgrade finishes what started west of I-35, tying into bigger regional growth. Think fewer wrecks, quicker hauls to Andover, and happier local commerce.

As states across the U.S. continue investing in major highway infrastructure, Texas has also marked a significant milestone on another large‑scale project. In San Antonio, the Loop 1604 North Expansion recently shifted traffic onto a newly built diverging diamond interchange at Blanco Road on March 23, 2026, signaling substantial progress in one of the region’s largest freeway upgrades.
