Karenge Water Treatment Plant shall foresee a major upgrade as a total of $52 million of funds has been allocated in order to add 36,000 cubic meters of water to the daily water production capacity of the Karenge water treatment plant which is currently approximated to be 12,000 cubic meters according to the Ministry of finance and Economic Planning. This upgrade that will be conducted on the plant is expected to make an increase of the water supply available to 48,000 cubic meters every single day.

The Karenge Water Treatment Plant is situated at the shores of Lake Mugesera, Rwamagana District in the Eastern Province. The water project is anticipated to bring a major contribution in the supply and distribution of water in the various regions of Kigali which include Kanombe, Ndera and Rusororo.

Karenge Water Treatment Plant Upgrade Financer

During the 26th of December, the Parliament made an approval of the $52 million that the Government of Rwanda would receive from the Hungarian Export-Import Bank that would be utilized in the upgrading of Karenge Water Treatment Plant. This agreement was signed by the government officials and representatives from the bank on July 16, 2023 in the city of Kigali. This loan is interest free and shall be repaid within a period of 24 years.

Most of the water shall be pumped to the Rwamagana industrial park being developed in Rwamagana District to facilitate its operations. One of the members of parliament stated that increasing the capacity of water in the plant to 48,000 cubic meters in a single day indicates a major development in the availability of water.

Almost 82% of the households in Rwanda use water from improved drinking water i.e. wells and public taps according to the Rwanda Population and housing Census that was taken in 2022 by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda. Rwanda has set a target of achieving universal access to clean water in the year 2024.
