Development of the Waste Water Treatment Ponds in Benguela and Lobito to be carried out alongside the construction of sewage sludge treatment plant and transfer stations in Benguela
Meanwhile the government is set to construct sewage sludge treatment plant and transfer stations in Benguela province. On March 23, 2023 the National Water Directorate launched prequalification process for the implementation of the project.
The scope of the project includes the construction of a fecal sludge treatment plant, as well as transfer stations where the collected fecal matter will be temporarily stored. These facilities will be built in two phases.
The first phase involves the construction of a common fecal sludge treatment plant for the municipalities of Benguela and Baia Farta. This facility will treat the faecal matter previously stored in nine transfer stations. The works will also include the improvement of three sanitary facilities in Baia Farta.
The Angolan government will finance both projects with a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The Loan will be granted under Phase I of the Inclusive Sanitation Project for Coastal Cities, which aims to improve access to sanitation services in the coastal municipalities. These municipalities are Benguela, Catumbela, Lobito and Baia Farta.
