University officials are excited about this fresh beginning for on-campus housing. The ground-breaking ceremony for the new university of Windsor student residence took place on Monday. Ghallia Hashem, the president of the University Of Windsor Student Alliance (UWSA), mentioned that many students believe living in the residence has a big impact on their university experience and is very important to them.
According to Robert Gordon, the president of the University of Windsor, the project will enhance the student experience and meet the urgent need for housing in Windsor. Gordon explained that this is one of many ways they are supporting students. It is also an opportunity to provide sustainable and valuable housing for both undergraduate and graduate students.
The new University of Windsor student residence to address housing needs
The new University of Windsor student residence will have six floors and offer 452 beds, including 68 beds accessible to all. There will be 226 suites with shared bathrooms (two students per bathroom) and 12 private residence life suites. The project spans 150,000 square feet and includes important amenities like six community lounges, a house lounge, a shared laundry facility, and a food hall with 275 seats.
Located on Sunset Avenue, south of Wyandotte Street West, the new student residence has been strategically planned to welcome Lancers before the fall 2025 semester. The initiative is the result of a partnership between Tilbury Capital, a real estate investment and development company specializing in student housing, and the university. Together, they are making this transformative initiative possible.
Gordon mentioned their collaboration with the city, the region, and private developers to find practical, affordable, and sustainable solutions. He sees the partnership with Tilbury Capital as just one example of their ongoing efforts. The university considers itself an important part of the Windsor Essex community, working towards solving these increasingly challenging issues.
