The construction of the first phase of the Magaya’s Heart Stadium in Harare’s Waterfalls is completed, but the official grand opening planned for tomorrow has been delayed due to the unavailability of several high-ranking officials who were supposed to attend.
Many regional leaders invited to the facility’s commissioning are currently in Angola for a SADC extraordinary summit this weekend, which has forced the organizers to postpone the stadium’s opening.
Initially, SADC leaders tried to hold their meeting virtually on Tuesday but faced internet connectivity issues, so they had to meet in person in Luanda this weekend, causing inconvenience to those planning to travel to Harare.
Various foreign dignitaries, ambassadors, and government officials are also expected to be present at the event.
Initial Capacity Of The Magaya’s Heart Stadium Once Fully Completed
The Heart Stadium, designed for a capacity of 40,000 people when fully completed, is just one part of a broader sports complex being constructed by Walter Magaya, the owner of PHD Ministries and Yadah Football Club. Magaya’s plans include an Aquatics center, a football hall of fame, track and field facilities, with a gym already in progress.
Magaya, who is passionate about sports development in the country, hopes that President Emerson Mnangagwa will officially inaugurate the facility if his schedule allows. He mentioned that other heads of state, former presidents, and high-ranking officials had to postpone their participation due to the SADC conference. Magaya emphasized that he’s not in a rush, as the stadium construction is complete, and the focus is on upgrading it to accommodate 15,000 seats to host significant international matches. He also mentioned the presence of two facilities, the main stadium and a training ground, which will be officially opened along with 80 boarding rooms located nearby. Additionally, a gym has been constructed to turn the site into a high-performance center combined with the stadium.
