Accra Central Electricity Bulk Supply Point Facility in Ghana has been commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The 161KV supply point is the first GRIDCo sub-station with a gas-insulated sub-station in Adabraka. Its construction was funded by the Japanese government. Its contractors were a joint venture between Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi Plant Construction and Yurtec Corporation contractors.
The $40M project aimed to address the increasing power demand and boost electricity supply in Accra and other parts of the capital. It is equipped with a control building and a main transformer platform hosting. The latter hosts three 125MVA transformers, a 170kV Gas-insulated Switchgear platform and platforms for 161kV cable terminators. In addition, it is home to 33kV indoor switchgear systems.

Remarks on the Accra Central Electricity Bulk Supply Point Facility in Ghana
Akufo- Addo expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. Additionally, he thanked families in the area that cede part of their lands to pave the way for the construction of the tower. The government according to the president will continue to work towards keeping the lights on. This is in spite of the global dynamics of energy pricing “because the alternative is not an option.”
“We are not going to Dumsor, we leave that to President Mahama,” the president revealed. He also added that with the operationalization of the Accra Central Electricity Bulk Supply Point Facility, power voltages have become stable. Additionally, he said the reliability of supply has been improved and with this, efficiency has been restored.
“This project is an excellent illustration of the strong cooperation that links the Republic of Ghana and the Kingdom of Japan. We cherish it very much. My gratitude also goes to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). ETG provided access to part of its compound,” President Akufo stated.
Government to step up efforts to maintain electrical stability
Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh emphasized that the government will step up efforts to maintain electrical stability in the commercial and residential sectors.
“It is the duty of a country that seeks to maximize the potential and ambitions of its citizens to provide the energy sector with all the necessary assistance to make it reliable and sustainable,” the minister revealed.
