The Bondoukou photovoltaic solar power plant project in Ivory Coast is in the clear following the approval of its concession agreement by the Council of Ministers.

The agreement was signed by H.E. Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy of the Ivory Coast and Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power. It took place during the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Week in January 2023 in the presence of H.E. Tiemoko Meyliet Koné, Vice President of Ivory Coast.

Amea Power, which is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy companies in the region with a clean energy pipeline of over 6GW across 20 countries also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA). The was signed with the Ivorian Electricity Company (CIE) and it concerns the sale of the plant’s output over a period of 25 years.

The project will be implemented on a public-private partnership (PPP) in which the concessionaire will be responsible for developing, financing, building, and operating the solar power plant.

Speaking during the approval of the concession agreement, Amadou Coulibaly described the project as “part of the promotion of private sector participation in the development of the electricity sector.” The aim, Coulibaly who is the spokesman for the Ivorian government, is to meet the growing demand for electricity.

The Bondoukou photovoltaic solar power plant will be built on an 85-hectare site located approximately 420 km northeast of the economic capital Abidjan. The project will require an investment of 37 billion CFA francs the equivalent of slightly over 56 million euros.

Upon completion in about 15 months after the start of its construction, the power plant will be capable of injecting 87,100 MWh of electricity a year into Ivory Coast’s national grid.
