The contract to construct the central section of Bilbao metro Line 5, has reportedly been awarded. The contract was awarded to a joint venture consisting of Acciona, Sacyr, Altuna y Uria, and Bycam. Euskal Trenbide Sarea, the local infrastructure manager awarded the contract.
The central section of Line 5 spans 2.8 km. It also forms part of the planned 6.3 km line connecting Aperribai with Galdakao. The project has a total cost of €88.1 million. It includes tunnelling, the construction of Bengoetxe and Galdakao stations, as well as the Olabarrieta and Abusu ventilation and emergency shafts.
This mostly underground Line 5 will replace the existing surface route. It is currently used by Euskotren and Bilbao metro services between Etxebarri and Usánsolo. The old line will be discontinued.

Construction of Bilbao Metro Line 5 Central Section
The aim is to enhance transportation services for the densely populated districts in the Ibaizabal Valley, located to the east of the city centre. Bilbao metro Line 5 trains will commence their journey at Etxebarri. Thus, they will serve five intermediate stations before reaching Usánsolo, where they will merge with the existing railway.
The Basque regional government granted final approval for the construction of Line 5 in October of the previous year. Work on the central section is expected to commence in September, with completion anticipated within four years. The entire Line 5 project is scheduled for completion by 2029.
