The Kenya-Tanzania Road that was commissioned by the East African Community in 2022 has currently attained more than 35 per cent completion status. The construction project of the road within Kenya is approximately 54 kilometres and is expected to be done by the year 2024. On the side of Kenya, the road construction project is expected to go at a cost of Ksh7.5 billion ($50 million) and it kicks off at the proposed New Mtwapa Bridge that is near Mtwapa.
The Kenya-Tanzania Road runs towards the northern direction through Mavueni, Shariani, Takaungu, Mtwapa Town, and Majengo before it ends at the entrance of Kilifi town. During the previous week, a joint meeting was held by the High Level Standing Committee on the the East Africa Road Network Project. The meeting revealed that parts of the road between Tanga town in the neighboring country Tanzania and Lunga Lunga in Kenya were nearly finished and were being used partially.
Kenya-Tanzania Road Project Funders
The Bagamoyo-Tanga-Horohoro/Lunga Lunga-Malindi road construction project is being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), European Union (EU), and the Kenyan government. The establishment of this road has been planned to be undertaken in different phases owing to the total size of 454 kilometres. In addition the need for the review of the studies for some of the parts of the road and also a lump sum investment of the project is also necessary. The key objective of the development of the Kenya-Tanzania Road is to make an improvement on the transport services between Kenya and Tanzania by reducing the amount of time taken during travel, reducing the congestion of traffic, and the operating cost of vehicles.
The phase I of the Kenya-Tanzania Road project is comprised of 120.8 kilometres Mkange-Tungumaa-Pangani road in Tanzania and 54 kilometres Mombasa-Mtwapa-Kilifi road in Kenya. The Kenya-Tanzania road shall run along the coastline of East Africa which has an impressive potential of tourism and horticulture. It is also inclusive of other social complimentary and services of access road consultancy.
