Kakamega Waste to Energy plant project was earmarked a total of 20 acres of land for the construction works for the project. This multi-billion project was expected to render jobs to the residents of Kakamega County following the collapse of the Mumias Sugar Company that left many Kakamega residents jobless. Recently, the Governor Fernandes Barasa made a major announcement on reviving the project as he stated that he was seeking an investor to embark on the project.

Once completed, the Kakamega Waste to Energy plant project is foreseen to be able to incinerate roughly 800 tonnes of solid waste in a single day and generate over 1,000 jobs. According to the governor, the investor is set to tour the site of the project before the end of January of the year 2024. The governor also revealed that they have managed to go through several proposals and only left with bringing in the investors. Barasa also stated that there would neither be launching nor commissioning of brand new projects until all the projects that are stalled have been completed.

Kakamega Waste to Energy Plant Construction Cost and Facilities

The first phase of the factory project was to consist of a section where combustion of waste to energy was to take place. The second section of the project would consist of a primary school for the community around and lastly the third section was to consist of a fully-fledged Level 4 hospital as part of the project. The construction cost of this project is expected to cost approximately Ksh6 billion.

The setting up of the Kakamega Waste to Energy plant would see the burning of solid waste in order to produce electricity energy that is clean and safe for human use. This plant will mark a major step in managing solid waste that has been a public health and environmental concern in the County Government of Kakamega. This approach is set to benefit more than 2 million residents in the county in that it will generate jobs and also electricity at the same time.
