Plans for the construction of the Ksh 6 billion Eldoret 64 Ultra-Modern Market in Uasin Gishu county, Kenya, are well on course according to the county boss Dr. Jonathan Bii.

The governor made the revelation recently during a meeting he hosted for the State Department of Housing and Urban Development. The latter are in the County for a technical handing over of the site to the contractor.

Bii also emphasized the importance of the project being carried out efficiently, with the highest quality standards and within the stated contract period. Furthermore, the governor affirmed that the project stakeholders are dedicated to ensuring that the project is carried out as intended in the construction plan.

Reportedly, the Eldoret 64 Ultra-Modern Market will be built on a 3.25-acre piece of land that was previously occupied by the Champions Market and 64 retail markets. The site is only a few meters from the Eldoret main stage terminus.

Upon completion, the state-of-the-art market will be equipped with a total of two basements, 210 parking spots, three cold rooms, 16 showers, 97 lavatories, lactation and daycare facilities, a food court, offices, as well as meeting rooms.

Speaking on the project earlier Governor Bii said that the Eldoret 64 Ultra-Modern Market will also have a cooling and packaging facility for packaging and value addition of fresh agricultural produce.

In November 2022, Champions Market was closed by the county government due to frequent fights for the 500 spaces at the market by over 3000 traders. The following month, at a public function in Eldoret, Governor Bii asked President Ruto for the national government’s support in constructing a larger and more modern market to provide traders with sufficient space.

In January 2023, the national government through the Lands Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Mwangi, announced plans to begin the construction of a multibillion modern market in Eldoret. Mwangi said a committee would be formed bringing on board county and national government officials to fast-track the project.

In Q1 2023, the county finalised the project’s design and the collection of views from the general public from across all six sub-counties towards the construction of the iconic market in the CBD.

In December 2023 a tender was advertised by the National government of Kenya through the Ministry of Mands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Developments, and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, alongside 18 other state projects. According to the advertisement, the deadline for interested bidders to submit their applications was December 19 that same year.

In mid-December 2023, Governor Bii presided over the clearing of the existing market to pave the way for the construction of a new one.

In January 2024, President William Ruto launched the construction of the Eldoret 64 Ultra-Modern Market.
