Statkraft, a hydropower generator company, has hired the Nordic construction company NCC to increase the dam safety at Sweden’s Hammarforsen hydropower plant in Jämtland. The spillway will be remodeled as part of the contract to increase discharge capacity.
NCC will take on this construction contract as a partnership. The estimated value of this order is Skr160m ($15.25m). Due to the threat of increased extreme water flows, the approximately 100-year-old Hammarforsen hydropower plant on the Indalsälven river in Jämtland urgently needs to be restored.
Jakob Norström, CEO of Statkraft, stated: “The Hammarforsen plant is undergoing extensive restoration due to this project. We must maintain a fully operational facility at all times and upgrade our power plants to meet the rising demand for electricity supply if we continue to be a dependable producer of renewable energy.
We can accomplish this most effectively when working with our contractors. Thus, we are eager to collaborate with NCC on this renovation project.”

Sweden’s Hammarforsen hydropower plant project scope
NCC will construct the cofferdam and perform demolition work. They will also replace the current segment gates in the spillway and two small floodgates. The contract further calls for raising the diaphragm wall at Hammarnäset and performing casting and concreting work for the power plant and instrumentation. For the concreting project, NCC will use eco-friendly concrete with a quicker curing time and a lower carbon footprint. Given that it will be easier to cool the concrete. This will also improve the working environment.
Richard Mattsson, production manager for NCC Infrastructure, stated: “NCC and Statkraft are connected. This comes from ongoing framework agreements and previously completed joint projects. This has allowed us to build trust and a shared vision. We have provided Statkraft with a production-friendly and affordable solution for the Hammarforsen hydropower plant by drawing on NCC’s experience with related projects.
In the first quarter of 2023, NCC will register this order under its Infrastructure business segment. The Hammarforsen hydropower project is expected to be finished in the second quarter of 2025.
