The Second Niger Bridge in Nigeria has been handed over to the Federal Government (FG) following the completion of its construction. The infrastructure was handed over by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) which provided funding and acted as the project manager.
According to Aminu Umar-Sadiq, the Managing Director of NSIA, the transfer of the Second Niger Bridge to the FG represents a significant achievement for NSIA. This is because “it aligns with its commitment to effectively execute large scale complex projects that positively impact socio-economic conditions for present and future generations of Nigerians.”
Scope of the Second Niger Bridge project
Reportedly, the Second Niger Bridge project involved the construction of a 1.6km concrete box-girder bridge over the river Niger. The project also involved the construction of two secondary bridges with a length of 21.7 meters each at Amakon Village Road and Atani Road.
Additionally, the bridge project involved the construction of a new cloverleaf interchange at Onitsha – Owerri Road. It also included the construction of 10.3 kilometres of approach roads from Asaba, Delta State and Onitsha, Anambra State.

A temporary link road, approximately 2.4 kilometres long, was also constructed from the Asaba end of the Bridge to the Benin-Asaba dual carriageway. This enabled immediate bridge operation until the completion of the two 17.5 kilometres connecting approach roads.
Second Niger Bridge project enablers
As mentioned earlier, NSIA funded the project through the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) and also acted as the project manager.
To fulfil both the technical and financial requirements of the project, the authority collaborated with critical stakeholders such as the Presidency, Federal Ministries of Works, Finance and Justice.
