Exxaro Resources, a South African mining company, has commenced the construction of a large-scale Lephalale solar project in the Limpopo Province. Valued at R1.56 billion, this solar investment aims to establish a 68MW solar PV plant, generating 176GWh of clean energy annually. The project, known as the Lephalale Solar Project (LSP), is designed to curb carbon emissions for 25 years from its commissioning.
The LSP was introduced through a groundbreaking ceremony by Exxaro Resources and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Cennergi. Positioned in the Waterberg District of Limpopo, the LSP aligns with Exxaro’s Sustainable Growth and Impact strategy, signaling the company’s foray into self-generation and organic growth.
This project is pivotal for Exxaro, contributing to the energy security of the Grootegeluk Mine and the Lephalale community. It also aligns with South Africa’s energy transition pathway and emphasizes Exxaro’s commitment to decarbonization, energy cost savings, and environmental stewardship.
Leon Groenewald, Managing Director of Energy at Exxaro, highlighted the company’s engagement with the local community. During peak construction, they plan to employ 300 to 400 individuals, prioritizing local talent to bolster economic growth in the region.
Completion date for the Lephalale Solar Project
Construction is already underway at the mine in Limpopo, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2025. The R1.56 billion investment will cover a 236-hectare development envelope, strategically located near Lephalale in Limpopo. Approximately 25km west of Lephalale, the site is close to Marapong and Eskom’s Matimba power station.
Exxaro’s CEO, Dr. Nombasa Tsengwa, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging South Africa’s abundant renewable resources for shared prosperity and sustainable development. The project reflects Exxaro’s growth strategy built over 17 years.
Limpopo Premier, Chupu Stanley Mathabatha, welcomed Exxaro’s commitment, particularly highlighting the revenue percentage contributing to local community upliftment. The Lephalale Solar Project aligns with corporate social responsibility goals, promoting economic growth, sustainable development, and job creation through renewable energy.
