Singapore’s ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) unveiled Malaysia’s second data centre in Centre Campus Johor state, shaping Southeast Asia’s digital landscape.

This state-of-the-art facility, boasting a whopping 120MW capacity, signifies the company’s second power play in the country, gearing up to flex its technological muscles.

Nestled in Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park, a stone’s throw from vibrant Singapore, STT Johor data centre aims to be the technological maestro of the nation’s southern tip. Lionel Yeo, STT GDC’s helmsman in Southeast Asia, voices unwavering dedication. He sees the expansion into Johor as a natural step forward, delivering vital digital infrastructure services. These services meet surging demands for complex design and scalability and anticipate future needs. Specifically, they gear up for high-performance computing workloads in AI and visual computing.

STT GDC’s recent revelation marks a significant milestone just a week after its inaugural project on November 2. Additionally, partnering with local IT service provider Basis Bay, they’re set to establish a 20MW campus. This strategic move positions them in the bustling Cyberjaya tech hub, located south of Kuala Lumpur.

STT GDC Expands Technological Horizon: Unveiling Malaysia’s Second Data Centre Marvel

The STT Johor data centre campus, sprawled across 89,040 square meters, is not just a run-of-the-mill digital haven. It has an intelligent energy management system and AI-enabled cooling, making it a technological powerhouse. Moreover, it’s all about going green with eco-friendly building materials, ensuring carbon-neutral operations. The construction dance for the initial 16MW phase will kick off in the coming months, promising a grand finale by 2025.

Why the fuss about Johor, you ask? Aside from its merits, this site’s proximity to Singapore adds a feather. This strategic location enables the data centre campus to play second fiddle to STT Singapore 5, a regional interconnection hub that pulls in big names like Singtel and Megaport, helping clients connect and exchange traffic while trimming overall costs.

STT GDC targets Southeast Asia, where data centre giants are vying for supremacy. Moreover, with 33 new data centre projects unveiled in the first eight months of this year, surpassing the entire count of 22 for 2022, the competition is fierce. STT GDC formed a strategic alliance with Ayala Group for a colossal $1 billion Manila data centre campus in May. Following suit, in September, EdgeConnex unveiled ambitious plans for three data centres in Malaysia, flaunting a combined capacity of 300MW.

Zhang Yi, the joint venture director of EdgeConneX Asia Pacific, envisions Southeast Asia as a goldmine for data centre development. He emphasizes the importance of strong local partnerships, subtly hinting at untapped potential in this tech-savvy region. Consequently, as STT GDC strategically positions itself in Malaysia, the stage seems set for an encore of digital fireworks in Southeast Asia’s future.
