Construction of the AC Hotel was subsequently delayed by the pandemic and its effects on the travel and hospitality industries after it was first announced in early 2020. Since 2011, Marriott has become the owner of the mid-and upper-level, European-inspired AC Hotel brand, which originated in Spain. After Grand Rapids, the Midtown location will house the second AC Hotel in Michigan. The Midtown location was originally going to be a West Elm Hotel, but those plans were revised earlier in 2018.
