Meridian Design Build has finished construction on FedEx Ground’s new $108.6 million warehouse and distribution centre. This is a part of an automated package for relocation. The  79-acre site in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, of a 479,000-square-foot package sortation and distribution centre for developer Scannell Properties.

The new facility, situated at 1035 Commerce Park Drive SW, will bring more than 480 jobs to southwest Cedar Rapids.

There are 190 loading docks, 12 drive-in doors, 168 internal van loading slots, and 31,977 square feet of office space in the new structure. A 660-car parking lot, 189 van staging spaces, 130 tractor parking spaces and a 330-stall trailer storage yard were also added to the property.

Meridian executed the project as a design/build project. Additionally, Cornerstone Architects handling the architectural design and Manhard Consulting handling the civil engineering design. The property is about nine minutes away from the Eastern Iowa Airport.

According to Caleb Mason, City Economic construction Analyst, the construction allows FedEx Ground Package System to grow its ground service network and local presence, as well as providing direct assistance to its hub in St. Paul, Minn.

With its 24-hour operation, FedEx Ground Package System will create 359 part-time and 75 full-time new employment. Mason calculated that the payroll budget to cover employee wages is around $20 million.

The corporation will receive a 10-year, 50 percent repayment of higher taxes under the city’s regular incentives. According to municipal authorities, based on the scale of the investment, this will yield $16.3 million in total taxes over ten years, of which $6.1 million will be rebated.

This initiative is “another huge investment in our community by a well-known company,” according to Mayor Brad Hart. “We have to keep growing our workforce.”
