The VIC Tram Facility Project in Australia is set for implementation following the award of its construction contract. The contract was awarded to an alliance led by the John Holland Group according to the Victoria State Minister for Public Transport, Ben Carroll. 

Currently, early works are underway with crews preparing the site for major works to commence later in 2023. Approximately, the project will create about 280 local jobs and opportunities in construction. The jobs will also be created in the maintenance and supply of materials as well as services. 

The VIC Tram Facility Project in Australia is a part of the government’s investment within the Victorian Budget 2021-22. It forms part of the government’s total $100 billion investment, specially geared toward transport infrastructure development projects.

Under the investment, the Victorian Government aims to deliver 100 Next Generation Trams. This in turn, will lead to the provision of more connections, and better and more accessible services for residents in general.

The VIC Tram Facility Project Strives To Offer Convenient Accessibility

With consideration given to community feedback, the project’s design feature sustainable and modern infrastructure. These include recycled plastic materials as well as efficient LED lights. Additionally, the new tram maintenance and stabling facility at Maidstone will include rainwater tanks. With a total harvesting capacity of 80ML, annually, the water will be used to wash the trams. 

Further commenting on the VIC Tram Facility Project, Ben Carroll said that the facility will serve as a home to the brand new fleet of accessible as well as modern Next Generation Trams. Moreover, it will also be the main location for maintenance, cleaning, and storage of the low-floor trams. Katie Hall, a local member noted that the project will transform the way residents get around within the community. More especially, those in Melbourne’s inner west will benefit from the next generation, low-floor trams.Â
