The south section of the 128.8 MW Ashikawa Wind Farm in Toyotomi Town, Hokkaido, has been completed by Dohoku Wind Farm LLC, a group company of Eurus Energy. Together with the north section already operational, all sections of the wind farm begun commercial operation on February 14, 2025. The wind farm is a part of the Dohoku Wind Power Generation Project. This is a project that will install 107 wind turbines at a total of six wind farms in the northern Hokkaido area. The project will thus be the sixth wind farm after the Hamasato Wind Farm, the Kawaminami Wind Farm, the Kawanishi Wind Farm, the Kabaoka Wind Farm, and the Yuchi Wind Farm.

With the Ashikawa Wind Farm starting commercial operations, the Dohoku Wind Power Generation Project has been completed as scheduled. The project’s overall capacity is now 434.5MW. Due to its ideal wind conditions, northern Hokkaido is one of Japan’s best places to generate wind power. Despite this,growth in the area has been slow due to the absence of adequate transmission line capacity to transport electricity to demand regions. In order to encourage the establishment of large wind farms in the region, Eurus Energy and its partners formed the North Hokkaido Wind Energy Transmission Corporation. In April 2023, the company started operating government-subsidized large-scale power grid and storage battery facilities for profit.

31 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy S.A. wind turbines that make up the Ashikawa Wind Farm. They each have an output of 4.3 MW each, making them among the biggest in Japan. Hokkaido Electric Power Network Inc. will purchase all of the power produced. It is anticipated to provide enough electricity to power around 76,000 typical homes and cut CO2 emisions by 142,000 tonnes annually*1.
