The first facility on the upcoming Kampala campus of Aga Khan University (AKU), is completed. The facility is known as the Nakawa Specialty Centre and offers chemotherapy and dialysis as well as diagnostic imaging such as CT scans, mammography, neurophysiology and ultrasound. FBW Group a leading African planning, design, engineering and architecture consultancy has helped deliver the specialised outpatient healthcare centre in the Ugandan capital.

The Nakawa Specialty Centre offers access to an array of medical specialists, including gynaecology, paediatrics, cardiology, neurophysiology, oncology and endocrinology. Physiotherapy, mammography, dentistry and laboratory and pharmacy services are also available.

FBW Group, which is headquartered in Kampala, led on the design work for the centre on the Old Port Bell Road, which has now opened its doors to patients.

FBW has developed a strong working relationship with the Aga Khan Development Network, helping deliver the Nakawa Specialty Centre a important medical and educational projects across East Africa.

Other projects underway

Work is currently underway to create a new Global Faculty Centre at the University of Global Health (UGHE) Butaro campus in Rwanda.

FBW Group is providing architectural and engineering design and supervision services for the building project.

FBW has also worked on a high-profile £9.5m project to deliver Malawi’s first specialist postgraduate medical training centre. The Clinical Research and Training Open Resource (Creator) which will provide the most sophisticated research environment in the country when completed

Creator is a partnership between the University of Malawi’s College of Medicine (CoM), Queen Elizabeth’s Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the University of Liverpool and the medical research foundation Wellcome.

In The Gambia FBW, which also has offices in Kenya and Rwanda, has been appointed as consultant to design a project at a leading medical research centre.

The development work at the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (MRCG at LSHTM) in Fajara, is FBW’s first major West African design project.
