The Bogotá Metro is not only an informative project but also an infrastructural one that aims at dealing with the acute traffic problems in Bogotá and contribute to the process of the city’s sustainable urbanization. being Bogotá’s first metro line this project in concept for over seventy years but is now on the way, with construction to begin shortly. The project is estimated to cost approximately US$4.1 billion which is being implemented by both the Colombian national government and the city of Bogotá, as well as from international lending agencies such as the World Bank, and the European Investment Bank.

The first phase of the bogota metro, Line 1, will stretch for 25 km from the southwest to the northeast of Bogotá. It will run alongside Avenida Caracas, which is one of the most congested traffic corridors within the city, with 16 stations and 10 interconnections with the TransMilenio bus rapid transit system already in the city. The stations will be established at interval whereby the average distance between any two stations will be 1.39 km enhancing accessibility for several millions use of the facility. This phase is expected to be completed in 6 years time or by the year 2028.

Project overview

The proposed metro line would be in the built up area and would therefore be built on the viaduct with height of 13.5 meters. This design does not require extensive land use and can be implemented in a shorter period of time than the systems which require construction underground. This has also factored in the improvements of some 600 000 square meters of public areas and includes the development of some 22 kms of bicycle lanes.

What is more, the Bogotá Metro once it starts its operations, is expected to drastically decrease traffic jams and air pollution in the city. The problem of traffic is specially acute, and car trips are one of the major sources of carbon emissions in Bogotá. By peak times, it’s expected that the metro will transport as many as 7,200 passengers per hour and thus, take pressure off the creaking road infrastructure. Also, it will be instrumental in lowering the levels of CO₂ emissions, which will be greatly important to the ecological future of the metro.

There are also concepts for future growth in the project as well. Currently under construction as phase two, it as is a continuation north and west and will connect other vital business and residential districts of Delhi. The light metro Expanded full expansion phases are expected to be realized by 2050 to ensure that Bogotá Metro remains an integral part of the city’s transportation system in years to come.
