Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has started closing off sections of Terminal C to begin renovations. This ambitious project aims to upgrade and expand over one million square feet of the terminal, improving its capacity and modernizing its amenities.

A Major Hub in Need of Growth

As one of the busiest airports globally, DFW is a crucial hub for American Airlines and hosts 27 additional carriers. In 2023, more than 81 million travelers passed through its doors. With its current five terminals struggling to keep up with operational demands and accommodating future growth forecasts, the necessity for renovating Terminal C has become pressing.

Terminal C Renovation Details

The renovation of Terminal C will encompass 1.1 million square feet, including the construction and modernization of 32 gates. This multi-phase project, planned to span until 2029 aims not only to enhance the terminal but also includes enhancements to its parking facilities. The existing parking structures will be torn down. Replaced with a six story building to address the increasing demand for parking spaces.

Ongoing Progress

Preparations for the terminal C renovations are progressing smoothly. Yesterday, security screening at gate C30 was closed off. Some check in counters operated by American Airlines were also closed. Nevertheless security checkpoints and counters at gates C21 and C10 are still open, for passengers.

Two years ago, the High C Gates were introduced at Terminal C’s end featuring five gates and marking a major milestone in the terminals upgrade. This collaborative project between DFW Airport and American Airlines sets a standard for the upcoming terminal C renovations.

Innovative Building Methods

To minimize disruptions contractors utilized a modular build approach for for the High C Gates moving and installing terminal sections overnight.

Expected Increase in Passengers

DFW Airport is gearing up for a surge in passenger traffic. During the Independence Day weekend, the airport anticipated that 1.5 million travelers would pass through its terminals. Reflecting a 5.5% rise from the year before. Travelers were advised to arrive as parking at Terminals C and D where most of American Airlines flights operate from was expected to fill up.

The Future of Terminal C

The planned renovations will expand parking options. Enhance amenities for passengers. According to DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue in 2023 “Terminal C has remained the same for half a century. Is due for a refresh. The updated terminal will offer increased space, state of the art technology and an improved customer experience.”

DFW Airport serves 28 airlines with 16 carriers operating flights to 256 destinations. These ongoing enhancements play a role in maintaining its reputation as a top tier airport.

DFW Airport’s terminal C renovations are anticipated to bring an economic boost to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. By generating construction jobs it will spur employment and economic vitality. Once the renovations are finished the improved terminal will increase the airports ability to manage a volume of passengers potentially enticing airlines and flight routes. This enhancement is expected to promote tourism and business travel, which will benefit establishments and the hospitality sector.
