Construction of Egypt’s New Delta Irrigation Water Treatment Plant at Sharqia is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country that has set the world records and achieves a new milestone in the field of water treatment and management in Egypt. Constructed by a joint venture comprising of Orascom construction and Metito.

This plant is developed in New Delta region and is very crucial for Egypt’s plan of efficient utilization of water resources, expansion of agricultural activities as well as provision of sufficient water to millions of people.

Construction cost

The New Delta Irrigation Water Treatment Plant – as a part of the agricultural and water management of Egypt – has developed the plant at the cost of about USD 3 billion. This investment is another proof of the Egyptian government’s concerns with the shortage of water resources and enhancement of water supply and demand in Egypt.

This plant is intended for treating the drainage water from the agricultural fields so that it can be used for the irrigation purposes and this is very necessary for the New Delta project of reclamation and development of more than 1. 5 million feddans that equal around 1. 56 million acres of desert territories. The plant also holds four records in the Guinness Book of Records, such as the largest seawater desalination plant of its kind. It uses the most modern technology to treat the largest possible volume of water, and it is capable of treating up to 7. 5 million cubic meters of water per day. This capacity not only generates a new record for the water treatment plants around the world but also increases the competence level of Egypt in managing its water resources more efficiently.

The wastewater treatment facility uses highly efficient filters, which ensure that the purified water is only suitable for agricultural use. It was observed that the plant’s design architecture and functionality were integrated with the modern technology and engineering standards, making the project unique in the water treatment industry. It is asserted that the New Delta Irrigation Water Treatment Plant will bring economic and environmental impacts. As a source of irrigation water, the plant helps to achieve the goal of the New Delta Project of improving on the production of food crops as well as food security.

Scope

It is also expected to generate many employment opportunities, increase the GDP of the country, and improve the quality of life among thousands of farmers in the area. Environmentally, the plant plays a role of minimizing negative impacts of scarce water supply to agriculture through re-cycle and re-use of agricultural drainage water thus sparing the limited fresh water in Egypt.

These sources also include an important role to prevent the pollution of natural water sources through proper treatment and management of agricultural effluents. It is therefore important to note that the New Delta Irrigation Water Treatment Plant plays a crucial role in the implementation of the overall strategic framework. The project will serves as a significant part of Egypt’s national water utility structure, as well as the nation’s Vision 2030 framework for sustainable development. It can be seen as Egypt’s commitment to effectively combat climate change and proper management of natural resources. All in all, the New Delta Irrigation Water Treatment Plant in Egypt is a groundbreaking project that makes the new world records and could help the state to solve the water-confident and develop the agricultural production.
