The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has unveiled the plans for the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care Center offering a glimpse into the facility being developed for local veterans. This modern center will replace the aging VA clinics located at 5001 N. Piedras St. near the William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
Construction teams will build the 493,000 square foot healthcare facility on a 36-acre site adjacent to the recently finished William Beaumont medical complex on Fort Bliss land in East El Paso. The strategic location aims to connect with services to ensure veterans have convenient access to comprehensive and up to date healthcare options.
Earlier this year, Clark Construction Group, a known contractor based in Washington, D.C. secured a $617.5 million construction contract for this project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the VA worked together to award this contract with Congress allocating $759.2 million to support the projects development scope.

Groundbreaking ceremony for the new El Paso VA Health Care Center
Officials will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on August 28th, and construction crews expect to conclude work by 2029 or early 2030.
The new El Paso VA Health Care Center project scope also involves site preparation, parking facilities, utilities, stormwater infrastructure and related enhancements required to facilitate the functioning of the healthcare center. These components play a role in ensuring that the facility runs smoothly and caters to the requirements of its patients.
Clark Construction Group has a wealth of experience in the field, with a track record of overseeing 134 healthcare projects in the ten years. Their portfolio boasts 20 million square feet of facilities and 5,158 hospital beds. Of note is their involvement in completing the $1.5 billion William Beaumont Army Medical Center project. Despite encountering delays and cost issues it was successfully finished in July 2021. For the El Paso VA center, Clark has teamed up with SmithGroup, an engineering firm from Detroit and HKS an architectural firm based in Dallas. This collaboration aims to combine their expertise to deliver a facility that meets top-notch design and functionality standards.

The new VA center is designed to cater to, than 43,000 veterans enrolled in the El Paso VA Health Care System, including those from Las Cruces. It will offer a variety of outpatient services such as care, mental health support, specialized care, ambulatory surgery and other services. The main facility will include the replacement healthcare facility with care clinics and essential support systems like building information systems and special foundations.
