Ghana has inaugurated Africa’s largest rooftop solar plant in Tema. The nation’s desire to fast-track its renewable energy rate accolades the project as a major boost. The project is expected to produce 16.82 megawatts of photovoltaic solar energy. Owned by LMI Holding Company Limited, it is the largest single roof top solar plant in Africa and constructed at the cost of $17 million. The generated solar power would be distributed to its clients within the Tema Free Zone Enclave (TFZE) industrial zone. Also known as the Mega Warehouse Rooftop Solar PV Project, it would become a beacon of sustainable renewable power progress in the country. The project spans 95.745 square meters (20 football fields) and is forecasted to generate 24.7 Gwh per year in clean energy output. Financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the project would be pivotal towards renewable energy in the country’s industrial landscape.

State of Affairs Regarding Africa’s Largest Rooftop Solar Pant

Minister of State for Energy, Mr Herbert Krapah, commissioned Africa’s largest rooftop solar plant. The minister commended LMI Holding for their feat and for establishing it at the doorsteps of TFZE. He said the project aligned with the government’s energy objectives to enhance energy security for industrial clients. He added that it would also provide access to clean, reliable, and cost-efficient power sources via solar energy. Furthermore, he lauded the IFC for funding the project and other LMIs and appealed to the corporation to do the same for other private companies in the solar energy sector. According to Mr Krapah, the project would not only provide employment but also empower young people through skills training. According to the report by Daily Graphic, Ghanaian engineers and technicians will execute the construction, connection, and installation of the entire project.Africa's largest rooftop solar plant

The Significance of the Mega Warehouse Rooftop Solar PV Project

The inauguration of Africa’s largest rooftop solar plant shows promise for revolutionizing Ghana’s renewable energy sector. The Minister of Energy noted that the project is essential as it would be necessary for its socio-economic impact. Furthermore, it would facilitate the creation of greener, sustainable jobs for the people. More importantly, it would help the country to meet its nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement. He said that LMI Holdings was also helping to introduce skills and technology to the young engineers whom they had trained as part of the development and maintenance of the project.

He indicated this would improve the standard of living of the people. “What you have done will help contribute to power distribution here (Free Zone Enclave). It is laudable because solar energy, over time, has reduced costs in the mix. You are helping the power industry, and you are helping the industry also to meet its green credentials. “Very dear to my heart is how this project feeds into the government’s overall vision for the power sector and, more specifically, our renewable energy vision,” Mr Krapa added. The completion of Africa’s largest solar plant is one that the nation anticipates to see what it will bring forth.
