SJI has partnered up with Captona to construct what will be one of the largest food waste-to-RNG facilities in the country. Located in New Jersey, the site will convert organic waste into pipeline-quality RNG that can be used for various applications to displace fossil fuels.

Undertaken by Linden Renewable Energy, the facility will accept a wide range of feedstock. This includes food waste from industrial, commercial, and institutional entities. Additionally, grease waste from restaurants and other food service establishments. Anaerobic digestion will be used at the plant. It is a natural process that breaks down waste in the absence of oxygen to produce natural gas and a nutrient-rich material that can be used as fertilizer.

SJI Food Waste-to-RNG capacity

The food waste-to-RNG facility will convert up to 1,475 tons of waste to produce up to 3,783MMBtu/day of RNG. This is the energy equivalent value of 30,200 gallons of gasoline per day. Furthermore, the project includes the development and construction of multiple off-site food waste pre-processing and repackaging operations. They will be located in New York City, New York State and New Jersey.

Additionally, LRE has partnered with Phoenix Power Group. They are the engineering, procurement and construction provider, proud to have top-tier equipment providers to bring this project to completion. LRE has also strategically aligned with multiple waste haulers in New York City and New Jersey. They will provide source-separated waste as part of their compliance with New York City and New Jersey organic waste diversion requirements.

Earlier this year, Viridi Energy also announced the development of a food waste-to-RNG facility. Located in New York, they collaborated with American Organic Energy to develop what will be a similar anaerobic digestion facility. The plant will convert approximately 210,000 mt of waste each year. This equates to the total annual food waste of Dallas, Texas. Furthermore, it is expected to have a carbon intensity of -100 CO2e/MJ. Further, the project is estimated to reduce approximately 100,000 mt of CO2 emissions per year, according to the company’s press release.
