The construction of the 1000-km Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway takes shape as it is given a green light by the federal government. President Bola Tinubu has approved the commencement of the design of the 1000-kilometer highway project. His approval of the project was echoed by the minister of works, David Umahi, during an inspection visit on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway. The Sokoto-Badagry construction project is fundamental in improving the road transport sector in Nigeria. The project has been approved despite the criticism that has trailed the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. The Bola Tinubu-led administration announced that it was planning the construction of the 1,000km Sokoto-Badagry road to link all the country’s geopolitical zones.

Once completed, the coastal road would be a vital link in connecting various country regions. This will include linking the region’s South-West, South-South, North-East, North-West, and North-Central roads.  “I am happy that Mr. President has also directed me to start the immediate design of the Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway,” said Mr. David Umahi, expressing gratitude for the directive from the president. The implementation of this project not only supplements the Lagos-Calabar highway but also helps improve transportation and movement across the region.

The Significance of the 1000-km Sokoto-Badagry Coastal Highway

The minister was keen to note the government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructures nationwide. He also shared insight into the federal government’s aim to establish a secure, safe, and sustainable network of roads. These coastal highways will be essential in linking all six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. This is expected to be done through a series of comprehensive road networks, such as the Sokoto-Badagry highway.

The project also helps in the transportation of industrial commodities which will immensely improve the economic situation in Nigeria. Furthermore, the project will also provide opportunities for the citizens in Nigeria such as employment opportunities. It also lays the groundwork for the construction of other major roads in the country. The minister of works mentioned another proposed spur road, aiming to connect Nigeria with Cameroon. With its starting point at the Enugu-Abakaliki region, the road will cover approximately 361 kilometres.

Other Significant Road Construction Projects in Nigeria

Sokoto-Badagry Coastal HighwayApart from the Sokoto-Badagry coastal highway, other construction projects such as the hailed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway are underway. Recently, the minister of works explained that the redesign of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway route has changed. It has been redirected from regions that included Water Corporation Road and now includes the coastal path. However, this redirection is foreseen to affect a lot of individuals, especially those living in Landmark Beach. Estimated at a loss value of $100M if these establishments are demolished, it is essential to avoid demolishing this town and its accessories. Once completed, these projects will ensure easy movement and transportation for Nigerians across the region.
