Oyo State Government has made a significant step in planning to upgrade the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Alakia, Ibadan. Governor ‘Seyi Makinde officially laid the foundation for the New Ibadan Airport Terminal. The facility is expected to accommodate at least one million passengers every year once complete.
Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi, Chairman of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport Upgrade Committee and former Commissioner for Finance, mentioned the project as a key milestone in the ongoing transformation of the airport. Additionally, he emphasized that the new terminal, to be constructed Craneburg Construction Ltd, is a testimony to Governor Makinde’s commitment to infrastructural development in the region.

This development project comes after the first phase of the airport upgrade. The first phase began in September 2024 with the extension of the runway to 3,000 meters so as to meet international standards. The entire upgrade project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026. The upgrade will enhance passenger flow, boosting cargo capacity, and most importantly positioning the Ibadan airport as a major aviation hub in Nigeria.
Significance of the Project
Adekanmbi pointed out the economic benefits of the upgrade. He stated that the modern terminal would not only improve travel experiences but also attract investments and drive general economic growth in Oyo State. He also acknowledged Governor Makinde’s leadership, describing his vision as pivotal in making the airport a gateway for both regional and international trade.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Duro Ogunsesan, Chairman of the Airport Communities, praised the governor’s efforts in spearheading ttransformation of the state.
Craneburg Construction’s Senior Manager, Edmond Maalouf, gave affirmation to attendees that the project would be completed on planned schedule. Furthermore, the Site Engineer Oliver Makhlouf issued updates on the progress of the upgrade of the runway.
