Scatec’s Kenhardt hybrid solar and battery storage project, which consists of three plants located in Northern Cape has become fully operational for the production and supply of electricity into the national grid.
Leading lender
Leading lender in Scatec’s kenhardt project debt is financial service firms named the Standard Bank Group with the help of British international investment.
Commenting on this undertaking, the chairman and chief executive officer of Scatec, Terje Pilskog notes that The Kenhardt project is more than a technological success; it’s a strong statement in pursuit of sustaining life on Earth.
He says that this is more than simply a power plant that showcases how solar and storage batteries can combine their capacity to keep up with today’s and tomorrow’s changing energy demands.
Further he saluted the Scatec team for completing the project on time without over-stepping its planned budget and maintaining the standards of health, safety, security and environmental conservation.
Construction cost
This $1-billion Scatec’s kenhardt project in Northern Cape is a major milestone for Scatec and its shareholders are promised good returns from it. A hybrid combining solar and battery storage plant enables overcome of intermittence challenges by solar and improves resilience of the grid. As the company states, the integrated storage provides for better integrity.
These plants are capable of dispatchable power production with fast response which helps in meeting the region wide energy needs at the period of high consumption.
According to the vice president of sub Saharan Africa at Scatec, Jan Fourie, “This project is not all just about putting power in homes but also about giving a community strength”.
solar capacity
The project has an installed solar capacity of 540 MW and a battery storage capacity of 225 MW, or 1 140 MWh, and delivers 150 MW of dispatchable power from 05: Sale of 00 to 21:30 year round to the national grid under a 20 year power purchase agreement to State owned Eskom.
With this innovative hybrid energy solution, we are ready to generate the electricity and contribute largely to South Africa’s renewable energy production. He says additionally that this partnership is not only about the generation of energy, but also about empowerment and sustainable development.
