With the Standard Gauge Railway expected to be Africa’s longest railway line once completed, Tanzania’s section of the SGR is shaping up. Tanzania’s government has outlined the transformative economic benefits Tanzania has gained so far from the emerging railway. Tanzania’s SGR, part of which became operational in June, has accrued an investment of $10 billion.
Current Status:
Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) is building a modern railway network spanning no less than 2,561 kilometers. Furthermore, it is expected to connect the country and provide seamless transportation. These include regions such as connecting the port of Dar es Salaam with Mwanza, Kigoma, and Katavi. It will also extend to connect with neighboring countries of Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the DRC. The possibilities and significance of the project is already noticeable through the section of the rail that became operational. The SGR has also spurred demand for local construction materials. Among these is steel and cement, stimulating the manufacturing sector.
Tanzania’s SGR: Of Unprecedented Significance.
Tanzania’s SGR is already proving to be of unprecedented significance despite only a part of it being done. According to the Minister for Planning and Investment, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, the train services along the line are proving their worth. He noted that the railway section between Dodoma and Dar es Salaam has transported 645,421 passengers. It also generated close to $5 billion by the end of September, a monumental feat. “This project is set to boost business and attract investment by cutting transport times and cost. It will also drive growth in domestic and international trade,” he said.
This was during the presentation of the proposed development plan for 2025/26 to the Parliament. He also noted that the project is expected to improve Tanzania’s transport and logistics. Through this, Tanzania will be the leading transport and logistics hub in East and Southern Africa. “From jobs to industrial growth, this project is reshaping the economy,” he stated. Prof. Mkumbo also noted that the SGR has generated over 30,000 direct jobs. It has also contributed to 15,000 indirect jobs since the project’s conception in May 2017.

Tanzania’s SGR is a project that President Samia Suluhu’s government has aimed to ensure is effectively completed. “This railway is just not about transport, it is a driving industry,” Mkumbo noted. Currently, 2,460 companies are working on the project under contracts worth sh3.69 trillion. The nation also aim to design the rail to facilitate seamless cross-border cargo movement. Through this, the SGR I also supporting international trade. Since 2023, approximately 519 investment projects have been registered along the SGR corridor. The Tanzania Investment Center has recorded a capital inflow of $4.59 billion and is anticipated to receive 115,566 new jobs. Tanzania asserts that the railway project is not just a transport system rather a bridge to greater economic growth. “It is also Tanzania’s future as a regional trade hub,” Professor Mkumbo noted. Moreover, he emphasized the government’s vision to transform Tanzania into a continental logistics powerhouse.
