Over 60% of the land area for the Tamale Affordable Housing Project, has allegedly been taken over by encroachers. The project boasts a total investment of $2,706,735 and is under development by Afreh Group. Furthermore, it serves participants of the Tamale Community Cooperative Credit Union. Initially, the project has an allocation of a total of 260 hectares by Royal Chiefs. However, the land that is currently available is less than 100 hectares.
The Northern Regional Minister paid the site a two-day working visit to monitor progress. During his visit, Fancis Asensu-Boakye disclosed the project’s current status. Nevertheless, the Minister or Works and Housing gave assurance that the government is still working towards fast-tracking completion.

Tamale affordable housing project in Ghana delays due to lack of funding
Lack of funds has made construction work on the Tamale Affordable Housing Project in Ghana to stall. The housing project, which is about 65% complete, aims to deliver 100 housing units of low-cost houses for low income earners.
The update was from the Country Policy Manager of Water and Sanitation for Africa (WSA). Mr. Charles Nachinab during the eighth Annual General Meeting of the Tamale Community Cooperative Credit Union (TCCCU) in Tamale, said the delay is due to partners failing to honor funding agreement. Tamale Community Cooperative Credit Union (TCCCU), who was also associates, did not provide the 20% upfront payment of the contract sum by mid last year to help finance the affordable housing construction project. Moreover, he said that only 82% of the upfront fee was paid by November 2014.
He also said that financiers were not turning to WSA for a second helping to the affordable housing construction project after they contributed GH¢1m. However, the government is also funding the project as well.
According to the Chairman of TCCCU, Mr Alhassan John Issah, said that they will look into the situation.Â
Mr Nachinab further said that, the financiers of WSA, have not been active since their last contribution of the total sum of US$273,976 into the project. Chairman of TCCCU, told members of TCCCU that all would be done to ensure the project’s successful delivery.
The 100 affordable housing units will be made up of two-bedroom self-contained houses.. THe units will be up for sale to the members of TCCCU at about US$ 4,767.
Elsewhere, investors have agreed to provide funding for the 10, 000 housing unit at Amasaman, as indicated by Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, The project was having preparations underway for commencement of its first phase.

Tamale affordable housing project to be revived
The Minister for Works and Housing recently said that the government plans to recommence works on the Tamale affordable housing project. Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye said that the projects stives to provide accommodation for the people of the city’s low income areas.
During his two-day working tour to the Northern Region to inspect the Ministry’s assets and liabilities, Mr Asenso-Boakye made an announement. He said that the State House Company Limited will assess the housing structures. Moreover, it will begin taking inventory of the land for the project in order to begin full construction work.

At the site of the Tamale affordable housing project, there were around three structures of storey buildings. They were in varying stages of construction that had been left, since 2009. The project initially begun during former President John Kufuor’s reign. However, it took a halt, upon his retirement.
In the recent evaluation by the State Housing Company Limited, there was an encroachment upon the land. Initially the project had 261 acres of land, but the State Housing Company Limited’s assessment show that it now only had roughly 94 acres of land.
The Ghanaian Minister Asenso-boakye, said that he knew the people of Tamale were eager to see the project progress. As a rsult, the government would do everything possible to see the project continue. He also said that the leadership of the region should help stop the encroachment on land for the Tamale affordable housing project.
Subsidized housing
He said that the government was working with the private sector to build affordable housing projects.As a result, the government would subsidize up to 20% of the total construction cost to make it affordable for the people. Moreover, the government was also working with banks to inlcude people on payrolls, whether private or public.Using their wages, as a mortgage that they they can pay back over a set period of time.
Meanwhile, Mr Asenso-Boakye also paid visits to the Choggu Low-Cost Estate, Sakasaka Estate, the Ghana Immigration Service housing unit. Alongside major drains in the Kalariga, Vittin, Koblimahagu and Gurugu areas of Tamale Metropolis, and also the Municipality of Sagnarigu. He went on to appreciate the efforts of Tamale and Sagnarigu assemblies to control floods in the country. More especially, by trying to establish a Ghana Hydrological Authority.
On the other hand, the Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Shani Alhassan Saibu launched a sanitation campaign to improve drainage in the region. To stop silting of the drains, he told the residents to clean their environment and dispose responsibly.
