Technip Energies has been awarded a significant contract by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV) to advance the offshore Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project, marking a major milestone in the development of Mozambique’s second deepwater LNG facility. The award also builds on earlier early-works contracts and continues to reinforce Technip Energies’ “leadership in FLNG engineering and project delivery”, as put by the developer. Technip is also building on the success of Coral South FLNG project and the hull launch that took place on January 16, 2026, in Geoje, South Korea. Additionally, with Coral Norte completion date slated for 2028, the project is using an enhanced replica design of Coral South to expand Mozambique’s LNG output and strengthen its role in the global energy market.
Coral Norte Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) Project Overview
Location: Offshore Cabo Delgado, Rovuma Basin, Mozambique
Capacity: 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG
FID: October 2025, with government and partner backing
Target Operational Date: 2028
Strategic Importance: Coral Norte is Mozambique’s second deepwater FLNG project, designed to replicate and improve upon the Coral South facility, which has been producing LNG since 2022 and established Mozambique as a key LNG exporter. Combined output from both facilities will also raise the nation’s export capacity to over 7 mtpa, making it Africa’s third-largest LNG producer.
Project Team and Stakeholders at Coral Norte FLNG Project in Mozambique
Ownership
Coral Norte FLNG project is being developed by the Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV) joint venture, in which the following partners hold interests:
- Eni S.p.A. with 50%, and is also the project operator
- China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) with 20%
- Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) with 10%
- Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) with 10%
- XRG (ADNOC subsidiary) with 10%
Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractors
- Technip Energies with FLNG engineering services contract.
- JGC Corporation as partner in FLNG topside engineering and EPC planning.
- Samsung Heavy Industries as shipyard and hull fabrication partner. Samsung Heavy Industries also completed hull launch for Coral Norte FLNG project in January 2026.
- TechnipFMC with subsea engineering and installation contract, including flexible flowlines, manifolds and umbilicals.

Offshore and Government Stakeholders
- Government of Mozambique who launched the Coral Norte floating LNG project with significant economic and jobs expectations.
- Minister of Natural Resources as project overseer in alliance with the industry partners.
Project Financing and Economic Impact of Coral Norte FLNG Project
Coral Norte is a multi-billion-dollar LNG facility estimated at approximately USD 7 billion in development costs. This includes costs on infrastructure and FLNG fabrication. Coral Norte LNG project is also supported by global oil and gas majors and national energy companies.
The project aims to:
- Double Mozambique’s offshore LNG output to 7 mtpa.
- Generate an estimated USD 23 billion in fiscal revenue over the project’s life.
- Support accelerated local job creation with USD 3 billion in contracts to local companies.
Project risks to look out for:
Execution: Floating LNG fabrication and offshore integration remain highly complex and capital-intensive.
Security: Mozambique’s northern regions have historically experienced security challenges that have forced the delay of LNG projects. Also noteworthy is that Coral Norte’s offshore location mitigates some of the security risks associated with onshore development.
Pricing: LNG price volatility, especially with the current U.S. interference in Venezuela and the developments between Russia, India, China and the West, could affect profitability and investment returns.
