Located in the Aswan Governorate of Upper Egypt, approximately 60 kilometers north of Aswan city, the Kom Ombo Solar Plant stands as a cornerstone of the nation’s transition toward sustainable energy. Developed by AMEA Power and completed in mid-2025, this utility-scale facility utilizes advanced bifacial solar modules and a massive 300 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide stable, clean electricity to over 250,000 households.

This project is intrinsically linked to the broader 5GW EliTe Solar Complex, a massive solar manufacturing hub in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, as both initiatives represent Egypt’s dual-track strategy to not only generate renewable power but also localize the production of high-efficiency solar cells and modules. While the Kom Ombo plant harnesses Egypt’s abundant southern irradiation, the EliTe Solar manufacturing complex provides the industrial backbone necessary to scale such installations across the country, collectively driving Egypt toward its goal of sourcing 42% of its energy from renewable paths by 2030.

The Kom Ombo Solar Power Plant has been completed, marking an important milestone for Egypt’s renewable energy drive. The 500-megawatt facility is in the Aswan Governorate and is now Egypt’s largest solar photovoltaic plant. China Energy Construction built the solar power plant, which includes more than one million solar panels. It features a 220-kilovolt booster station, which ensures efficient transmission of electricity in Egypt.

Chinese Ambassador Liao Liqiang announced it, emphasizing the reality that this project is consistent with Egypt’s Vision 2030 for green energy. The plant has a total direct current capacity of 560 megawatts. Once completed, it will supply clean electricity to some 256,000 households a year. It will save on carbon dioxide emissions by 760,000 tons each year. Happily, the Kom Ombo Solar Power Plant marks successful collaboration between Egypt and China in developing green infrastructure.
