ENGIE and NHOA have confirmed a partnership to build a 320 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Drogenbos, Brussels. This project is ENGIE’s third battery storage development in Belgium. The BESS contract to NHOA covers supply, commissioning, and long-term service. Construction is scheduled to start March 2026 ahead of project commissioning in 2027.
Project Overview
The Drogenbos battery storage project by ENGIE and NHOA is recognised under Belgium’s capacity market scheme. This is under the fifth Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction. The Drogenbos BESS also has a 15-year capacity contract starting November 2027. This offers both price and revenue certainty for the project. With 80 MW output and 320 MWh storage duration, the project will play a key role in balancing intermittent renewable generation and peak demand. It also has the potential to meet the daily electricity needs of tens of thousands of households during discharge cycles.
ENGIE’s Belgium storage fleet also includes the ongoing 400 MWh project in Kallo and a larger energy storage build out including the recently completed 800 MWh Vilvoorde park. These continue to help with Belgium’s efforts to stabilize the grid while pushing for decarbonization and energy security.
