For the first time the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg was selected to host this year’s annual Green Building Convention. This is expected to shift the spotlight on Sandton and Gauteng as hubs of green building. Sandton boosts of the largest number of green building in Africa many of which are ground-breaking mega projects.

Since its launch eight years ago, the convention has been hosted in Cape Town. Sandton was chosen for this year’s event because it is South Africa’s green building flagship project.

Sandton hosts the first ever Green Star SA rated building in South Africa and is home to possibly Africa’s largest collection of green rated buildings of any CBD. The Nedbank Phase 11 that houses Nedbank’s headquarters and located on the corner of Rivonja Road and Maunde Street in the Sandton CBD was the first green building project to be certified by the GBCSA back in 2009.

Some of the features of this pioneering green building project include a rain water harvesting system and black water treatment plant an energy efficient system and highly efficient water fixtures and fittings
The rain water and blackwater treatment systems supply water for all non-portable water requirements such as irrigation, toilet flushing and for cooling towers while the water efficient plumbing reduces outflows to the sewerage system by 50%

There are many more new upcoming groundbreaking office buildings under construction in Sandton Central that are green developments. The mult-billion new Discovery head office being development by Growthpoint and Zenprop , Sasol’s new global headquarters which opens later in the year and Alice Lane Phase III, the final development in Abland and Pivotal Property Fund’s massive Alice Lane development are a few among many more upcoming projects.

The new Discovery and Sasol headquarter buildings are one of the largest green buildings developments in Africa. They are cutting edge marvels of green building and sustainability and will add to the ever-growing list of Sandton’s landmark green building projects
