An event dabbed Smart Cities Africa is set to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The move comes even as the concept of the ‘Smart Cities’ is now gaining more traction worldwide as governments turn to technology to solve service delivery problems. The notion of a city as a web of independent systems is long gone. Today, urban dwellers are demanding a more interconnected approach to city planning in which major amenities such as traffic management, power and water interact with each other. This is the concept of Smarter Cities, and it has become a reality!
Following in the footsteps of India which has launched a massive campaign to build 100 Smart Cities, President Jacob Zuma announced during his 2015 State of the Nation address that over R6 billion will be spent in 13 cities on planning, building and operating integrated public transport networks during this financial year. Nigeria has attracted $18 billion in private foreign investment for the development and building of its new financial hub, Abuja City. Kenya and Ghana have launched the planning of their Smart Cities projects in order to provide smart solutions to the growing urban population and aging infrastructure.
The Smart Cities concept has become critical to ensuring the survival and maintenance of urban hubs. However, as impressive as these plans are, problems do tend to crop in including cost, land use management, implementing energy efficiency functions and technologies.
AMC International is proud to announce the inaugural Smart Cities Africa platform, taking place from 21 – 23 October 2015 at the Sandton Sun in Johannesburg, South Africa.
