The first concrete has been poured on $100bn Micron’s semiconductor facility in New York ahead of planned schedule. The concrete has been poured for the foundation of the fabrication plant in the Town of Clay. Leaders came together Thursday for a “concrete progress” celebration, which comes more than one quarter ahead of the original plan, officials said. “As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, data and memory are foundational to the modern economy, and Micron is increasing our U.S. investments to more than $250 billion through 2035 to meet that moment,” said Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron chairman, president and CEO.
It was another major milestone in the long-anticipated semiconductor facility project. It was just in January when local, state and federal elected officials, alongside Micron’s top brass, that ground officially broke on the project. The name of the day was “Concrete Progress.” Much of the focus was on how Micron promises to advance Syracuse and Central New York to new age of technology. New York seems to be advancing the projects under the Chips Act such as the GlobalFoundries semiconductor expansion programme. The programme is a manufacturing investment initiative intended to increase semiconductor production capacity in New York and Vermont. The programme includes multiple projects aimed at supporting domestic chip manufacturing in the United States.
Outlook on Micron’s Semiconductor Facility in New York
Micron’s semiconductor facility in New York highlights a key step for the state in shaping future projects in the region. Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon referred the project as a “great American story.” He also said those who doubted the possibility of the project even coming into fruition are now watching. 100 Years from now someone will be making the newest greatest tech, but they won’t know how we got here,” he said. Mehrotra said the facility and its four planned semiconductor fabs are the beginning of the future of Central New York. Moreover, he said it’s about people’s careers, families and American Technology.
“What we are building here is one of the most complex manufacturing projects in the country,” said Mehrotra. “Let me put that into perspective, the foundation will require more than 3-hundred thousand cubic yards of concrete roughly four empire state buildings.” He added, “Each fab will contain 70-thousand tons of structural steel nearly as much as the golden gate bridge and over 4-thousand skilled tradespeople will be working on this site every single day.” Micron said construction will start on the second of four fabrication plants in 2028.
