MMA Production Facility in Bay City, Texas

A first of its kind $1.6bn methyl methacrylate (MMA) production facility by Röhm has commenced operations in Bay City, Texas.  Moreover, it’s one of the largest industrial investments in the area’s recent history. Röhm, a German chemical company, announced that North America’s first C2-based methyl methacrylate (MMA) production facility is now operating at full scale in Bay City. Advent International also invested about $1.6 billion in Röhm, supporting the company’s growth and the transfer of its technology to the U.S. through the Bay City plant. MMA is a chemical used to make acrylic plastics, coatings, adhesives and resins. It is also often used for automotive, construction and medical technologies.

The Bay City production plant employs about 90 people and has an annual MMA production capacity of 250,000 tons. Company officials say the plant uses Röhm’s ‘Leading in MethAcrylates’ (LiMA) technology. Other major industrial projects are also taking shape in Texas such as the $55bn Terafab chip manufacturing plant.

SpaceX h secured a 35-year tax exemption for its $55bn Terafab chip manufacturing plant despite local backlash. However, local residents voiced concerns about environmental impacts. They also criticized the sheer scale of tax incentives being offered to one of the world’s most valuable private companies.

Outlook on the MMA Production Facility in Bay City, Texas

The MMA production facility in Bay City, Texas leverages the LiMA technology to cut energy and water use. It also reduces carbon emissions by up to 42 percent. Röhm says it’s the first time LiMA has operated at full industrial scale worldwide.  “LiMA technology does not only mark a technological quantum leap, it is a true game changer for the methacrylate industry,” Ronald Ayles of Advent International said in the release.

He also noted that Bay City shows that the process can perform at industrial scale while “delivering efficiency and environmentally friendly benefits.” The plant uses a nearly closed water cycle with nearby constructed wetlands, according to the release. On the other hand, digital systems help improve efficiency and sustainability. MMA produced at the Bay City plant is sold under the MERACRYL brand and shipped by truck, rail and inland waterways.

The facility’s opening comes after several years of delays following the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Houston Business Journal. The plant was originally expected to open by the end of 2023.
